Hertfordshire International College (HIC) Agriculture Programme

Hertfordshire International College (HIC) introduces its newest course offering, the BSc (Hons) Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security. This is a very timely and practical degree as we’re all now facing the challenging issue of looking after our environment, while providing enough resources.

The undergraduate course will be offered through HIC’s Life and Medical Sciences foundation programmes. Students interested in taking the Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security undergraduate degree must successfully complete HIC’s Life and Medical Sciences undergraduate foundation before proceeding to the degree.

The Foundation Programme – This is considered the first stage of the undergraduate course. The foundation programme will run for two semesters at the Hertfordshire International College (HIC). It will help you prepare for degree level by enhancing your study and academic skills while familiarising you with university protocol. To successfully move to degree level student must the meet pass requirement.

BSc (Hons) Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security – This degree was established with the joint expertise and facilities of The University of Hertfordshire, The Royal Veterinary College, Rothamsted Research and Oaklands College and with leading companies in the agricultural and food industries.

This three year full time course will cover sustainability and food security in the context of business and management of land. Further, you will develop gain a global perspective on the challenges of food security.To summarise, students will cover the following :

First year

  • Acquire knowledge on subjects such as cell biology, global agricultural systems, agribusiness, food security and human nutrition, animal physiology, functional agro-ecology and livestock production concepts.
  • Do a work placement with a relevant organisation / institution

Second Year

  • Acquire knowledge on subjects such as Law in land-based industry, sustainable crop production, livestock production systems, pre-harvest livestock production, research design for agriculture, and livestock production harvesting.
  • A work placement with an agricultural organisation. You have the option to do a years placement in second year.

Final Year

  • Acquire knowledge on subjects such as the new developments in crop production, genetic improvement in animal science, global agricultural business, disease and disease control and in challenges for food security
  • Complete an individual and major research project or dissertation

With this degree, a wide range of career opportunities are available for you and not just in the agriculture industry but in several related industries as well. You can work in organisations such as the government departments, research institutions, NGOs and conservation organisations.
