Medicine at UCLAN

The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) offers a high calibre undergraduate degree in Medicine. UCLAN is the newest medical school in the UK and is tailored to meet the needs of international students. It offers a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) which are 5 year undergraduate programme that aim to equip students in becoming professional medical doctors.

Entry to the MBBS degree programme is very competitive, but UCLan provides an alternative route for international students who do not meet the direct entry criteria. Students interested in taking the MBBS programme can study the Medicine Undergraduate Foundation Programme offered at ONCAMPUS UCLan, a UK ONCAMPUS education centre based on UCLan’s campus. This route gives better preparation and helps students successfully meet the entry requirements of the MBBS course. Upon favourable completion of the foundation programme, students are granted entry into the University.

Medicine Undergraduate Foundation Programme – This 3 term (1 academic year) programme delivered at ONCAMPUS UCLan gives you a better chance of entering the First year of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). In this programme you will study Biology, Chemistry, Maths and English. You will learn through classroom or lab-based study and volunteering placements in a health and social care setting. You will also be provided a Personal Tutor who will support you in your student life in the UK and will help you prepare for your MBBS course interview.

To be eligible for the programme, you must meet the following entry requirements:

  • You must be at least 17 years old
  • Have completed senior secondary education
  • English requirements: 6.0 IELTS in every element
  • Academic requirements depend on your country of education

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) – This is the first undergraduate medicine programme of the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), one of the UK’s top universities and the first modern university in the UK to be listed in the QS World Rankings. The programme will develop students’ knowledge on basic medical sciences, communication and clinical skills. MBBS Students at UClan are guaranteed quality through the continuous assurance of the General Medical Council (GMC).

During the 1st and 2nd year of the programme, students will study at Preston campus’ state-of-the-art clinical skills laboratories and will undertake community placements. At the end of the 2nd year students will have a secondary care placement. In the 3rd and 4th year, students will undertake supervised clinical placements in one of the university’s clinical education partners:

  • East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT)
  • Lancashire Care Foundation Trust
  • Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust
  • Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust
  • 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

In the 5th year, students will have a rotation of four, six week apprenticeships with supervision from departmental mentors and an assigned clinical supervisor.
