What international students can do during their free time

While it’s very important to focus on your studies, it’s also equally important that you enjoy your time abroad. Being miles away from home is not easy so make sure you have fun. Plus you will learn new things, meet new people and discover new places!

Outdoor activities – Check out your local communities actives. A lot of cities and towns have tourist attractions such as Go Ape, Castles, Manors, Gardens and more. If you’re lucky enough to be near the coast explore the beaches and coastal pathway. You can spend your time basking under the sun or take part in water activities such as surfing and kayaking. If you are inland see if there are any walking or cycling routes.

Walk around the neighborhood – Exploring a new area by foot is the best way to learn about it. While walking you can find out about local shops, supermarkets, restaurants, pubs and the layout of the town. Also you may discover beautiful scenery, a local park and interesting shops.

Go out with your friends – Whether with local or international students it’s important that you socialise. Going out with them is a great opportunity for you to develop new relationships and discover other people’s cultures. Spend time in coffee shops or try local or international cuisines. You can also watch live events, go to theme parks or visit museums of your interest.

Travel – Your study abroad experience wouldn’t be complete if you didn’t explore your host country. Don’t miss this opportunity to visit famous landmarks and see the places you’ve heard about. See if you can travel with friends from your university or travel with student-orientated companies such as STA Travel. Plan an itinerary so can maximize your travel time.

Participate in sports – Playing sports is oneway to take care of your health and meet like-minded people. A wide range of sports activities tends to be available at higher education such as football, basketball, cricket, and taekwondo. Bigger universities have more interesting things like Hockey, Lacrosse, American Football and Dance. Make sure you check with your university what sports societies you can join.

Studying abroad is a once in a lifetime opportunity so while you’re away from your family and friends, make your experience worthwhile by making the most out of your time there!
