University Accommodation in the UK

For international students studying in the UK, finding the best university accommodation can be an overwhelming process. So, when arranging for your student accommodation, it’s best to research and plan ahead. Last minute arrangements can cost you more and stress you out. Here are important things you need to know regarding university accommodation in the UK. Read on.

Accommodation Options
University owned accommodation can be your best choice when starting your education in the UK, especially if you’re new to the place. This can give you the convenience of arranging your accommodation before coming and make you feel more secure. Usually, these accommodations are in their halls of residence or in their student housing. These are not always located inside their campuses, but can also be a distance away (which can require travelling). For students under 18 years old going to college, home stay with pre-approved families is the only option.

In most universities, international students are given the priority for an on campus accommodation. If your accommodation is not on campus, it’s advisable to ensure that there are facilities and services you need nearby. Accommodations are usually furnished, but inquire ahead if some things are unavailable or just bring your own bedding, towels, and other household items. Securing an accommodation is entering into a legal contract so keep in mind all the details. Don’t forget to check if the contract duration suits your study requirements, too.

How much and inclusions
In selecting your accommodation, identify the rent and other costs you will incur during your entire stay such as transportation, utilities, food, as well as your books and other materials. For some accommodations, there are items they may not include on their package rates (such as the food and other utilities), thus it’s important to consider all those costs beforehand. It’s highly suggested that you secure a possessions insurance to cover your properties from theft, fire, loss, or accidental damage. This may be included on the package, but in case it isn’t, ask the university if they can recommend an insurance provider.

University accommodation prices can range from approximately £60-167 per week, depending on the location or the university, room size, accommodation type and contract duration. Contract duration can take up to 40-50 weeks. You may also be required to give around £200 – 300 as security deposit or booking fee, which may be deducted from your first payment or will be given when you leave (this may be less as expenses such as property damage costs will be deducted, if you have caused any). Universities also offer flexible payment options which can enable you to pay your rent through installments. You must verify though what are their specific payment terms to avoid late payments and penalties.

Future Alternatives
Other accommodation options are available for international students in the UK. There are private sector housing and lodgings that you can check where you will be managed by a landlord or the owner. On your 2nd year, you may select one of these if you find it suitable for you. You can find your own accommodation off campus through agents that handle student accommodation or agencies recommended by your university. Some universities may also help you with checking the contract before you sign it. You also need to check if the property or landlord is under a reputable accreditation scheme to make sure you are provided with professional housing services.

Visit your university’s website to look at specific information and make sure you establish proper arrangements with them. They also have a dedicated team you can ask for support regarding your accommodation in their university. You’re on your way to fulfilling your dream of studying abroad. So, avoid worrying, arrange your accommodation in advance, and enjoy the journey!
